Cater Care Services unveils the BigBelly Solar Bin at Mornington Village

COLLIE, WA – On Tuesday, February 18th in an Australian first, Cater Care Services unveiled, the BigBelly 3 Solar bin, making Mornington Village the first site anywhere in Australia to have the bin in use.

At the Mornington site, Cater Care is trialling both the BigBelly 3 Solar Bin and the BigBelly Recycling unit, which with an eye-level solar panel, are expected to be a magnet for responsible disposal of waste and recycling material, with noticeably decreased rates of litter and higher rates of channelling recyclable material to its appropriate bin.

“Today we unveil the next step in Cater Care’s sustainability framework that sets us on the path to becoming Australia’s leading sustainable facilities service provider.” said Tim Young, Worsley Safety Health and Environment Manager. “This is one more important step towards achieving our sustainability goals.

“We are pleased to be using this advanced technology and embrace ideas like this that provide us with the opportunity to save Cater Care and our client’s money and natural resources.

As part of Cater Care’s ongoing environmental measures to support our clients’ vision for high efficiency and innovative services, Cater Care is trialling the solar-powered waste and recycling bins which are more cost effective and more efficient than our traditional wheelie bins.

With the solar panels generating energy to the battery that powers a compactor within, these bins will prevent overflowing, vermin access to waste, decrease the number of collection trips and have the potential to cut related fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions by 80%.

One bin has the capacity to hold 750 litres of waste (normal site wheelie bins hold 140 litres) and can operate for a week on the energy it takes to make a pot of coffee.
Manufactured in the United States, the bin operates using a small 12-Volt battery that is kept charged by its solar panel on sunny or cloudy days thus enabling the battery to provide a power reserve for several weeks.
