A Collaborative Approach Creates Job Opportunities

In March 2016 Cater Care announced an Indigenous employee training initiative in Weipa.

The collaboration between Cater Care and My Pathway is assisting with job opportunities created by the Rio Tinto “Amrun” bauxite project.

The initiative was designed to share business knowledge and expertise and to increase meaningful and sustainable employment opportunities for local Indigenous trainee candidates. The first course held in July has been a resounding success!

18 students ranging in age completed the six-week course, which included a

• A contextualised training package which catered for potential employment opportunities:
• Practical work experience within the Weipa Motel venue; and
• Employer induction (from potential host employer) including a full medical.

A graduation ceremony was held for the students on August 18 at the Albatross Hotel to celebrate their success.

Company representatives from Bechtel, Rio Tinto, and local businesses – Goodline and NQ Civil Engineering Contracting attended. Local Education Representatives, Community Members and government representatives from Prime Minister and Cabinet were also present to watch the graduates receive their certificates from Warren Entch, the Federal MP for Leichhardt.

The program has drawn much interest and in an exciting development for the graduates, Bechtel, and My Pathway are working together to provide some on-the-job training at the Amrun project for the graduates.

Congratulations to the 16 ladies and two men who have achieved their Certificate III in Cleaning Operations qualifications.
